2.1 Inclusive Teaching
Adapting teaching so that learners with different abilities, languages, backgrounds, ages and learning needs can participate and learn successfully. Emerging Educators develop practical strategies for recognising learner differences, adapting instruction and creating equitable opportunities to participate.
| Sub-topic | Keep / change | Rationale | Research/search keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Differentiation | Keep / strengthen | Probably the most broadly applicable inclusion skill for Emerging Educators; directly addresses heterogeneous classrooms | differentiated instruction, differentiated teaching, differentiated learning, instructional differentiation |
| Multilingual classrooms | Keep | Highly relevant given UnitEd's geographic scope and the likelihood of learners using multiple languages | multilingual classrooms, multilingual education, multilingual pedagogy, language-inclusive teaching, translanguaging |
| Mixed-age / multi-level groups | Keep | Particularly relevant for community and under-resourced education settings | multi-grade teaching, multigrade classrooms, mixed-age teaching, multi-level classrooms |
| Neurodiversity / additional learning needs | Keep, but broaden | Important, but "neurodiversity" alone is too narrow; the practical focus should be adapting teaching for diverse learning needs | inclusive education, special educational needs, additional learning needs, neurodiversity in education |
| Gender-responsive teaching | Keep | Relevant to equitable participation and classroom interaction, particularly in contexts where gender affects access or participation | gender-responsive pedagogy, gender-responsive teaching, gender-inclusive education |
| Trauma-informed teaching | Move to context-dependent / later | Potentially highly relevant in some UnitEd contexts, but not every Emerging Educator needs specialist trauma-informed practice | trauma-informed education, trauma-sensitive teaching, psychosocial support education |
| UDL | Keep as an approach, not a standalone topic | Useful framework for designing accessible learning, but shouldn't become theory-heavy | Universal Design for Learning, UDL education, UDL teaching strategies |
